European pet pharmacy — WooCommerce store and WP Affiliate customization

WooCommerce pet pharmacy store with a customized WP Affiliate program for vet clinics — multi-tier commissions and recurring subscription revenue.

Completed: August 2024 Type: Portfolio Project

A European pet pharmacy needed a WooCommerce store that respected the realities of selling pet medications in the EU — prescription handling, multi-country VAT, currency considerations and the customer trust signals pet owners look for. On top of that, the business model required a vet-clinic affiliate program that off-the-shelf affiliate plugins were never designed for.

I built the store and then customized the WP affiliate plugin so it spoke the vet-clinic business language — per-clinic commission tiers, recurring commissions on subscription medications, and a clinic-friendly dashboard. WooCommerce affiliate customization done to fit the actual business, not the other way around.

The challenge

Selling pet medications in the EU is not the same as selling t-shirts. There are prescription-handling considerations, multi-country VAT (every member state has its own rules), currency display preferences, and customer trust requirements that pet owners take seriously when they’re buying medication for their animals.

Layered on top, the business wanted an affiliate program with vet clinics as the referrers. Stock affiliate plugins assume a creator/influencer model — flat commission, one-off payouts, generic dashboards. Vet clinics work differently: higher referral volumes deserve higher commissions, prescription refills are subscriptions that generate ongoing affiliate revenue, and clinics want to see their performance through their own lens, not a marketing-agency lens.

My approach to WooCommerce affiliate customization

I built the WooCommerce store to fit the EU regulatory model first, so the foundation was sound. Then I customized the WP affiliate plugin through hooks — leaving the plugin core untouched and adding the business-specific logic alongside it. Same pattern I use everywhere: extension points, not forks.

The mental model was that a vet clinic is not a generic affiliate. It is a business partner with its own customer base, its own referral patterns and its own expectations. The affiliate layer was reshaped around that, instead of forcing the clinics into a flat marketing-affiliate flow.

What I built

Two systems, woven together — a regulatory-aware WooCommerce store and a vet-clinic-aware affiliate layer:

  • WooCommerce store with product layout tuned for pharmacy buyers — product pages built around the information pet owners actually need before they buy medication
  • EU VAT-aware checkout — multi-country VAT handled correctly at checkout, with the right rates and the right display
  • Multi-currency handling — customers see the currency they expect
  • Subscription-friendly product setup — recurring medications priced and delivered on a subscription cadence, with the affiliate layer aware of it
  • Per-clinic commission tiers — higher commission percentages for clinics with higher referral volume, so the most active partners are rewarded
  • Custom referral URLs with vet clinic branding — each clinic gets links that feel like an extension of their practice, not a generic affiliate URL
  • Recurring commissions on subscription products — refill prescriptions generate ongoing affiliate revenue for the referring clinic
  • Affiliate dashboard built for vet clinics — referrals, commissions, top products and earnings shown in a way that makes sense for a clinic owner
  • Automated commission tracking and payout reporting — payouts run on schedule with reports the finance team can verify
  • GDPR-aware data handling — across both the store and the affiliate program, consent and data rights are handled properly

Recurring affiliate revenue is the unlock

For prescription pet medications, the customer often comes back monthly or quarterly for refills. A standard affiliate program would pay the referring clinic on the first purchase and call it done. The customized version pays on every refill for the life of the subscription — which turns the referring clinic into a long-term revenue partner, not a one-off marketer. That single design choice is what makes the program worth running for the clinics in the first place.

EU-specific store considerations

EU VAT is the kind of detail that quietly breaks an international store if it is not handled at the foundation. The store applies the right VAT for each customer’s country, displays prices the way each market expects, and integrates with the affiliate commission logic so that commissions are calculated on the right base. None of that is glamorous, but it is the work that makes the rest of the platform credible.

The result

The store handles EU regulatory complexity without needing manual ops intervention on every order, and the affiliate program turned vet clinics into active long-term partners instead of passive ones. The recurring-commission design means subscription medications quietly generate ongoing affiliate revenue every month, which makes the program self-reinforcing — the more clinics refer, the more incentive they have to keep referring.

  • Active vet-clinic referrals — the dashboard makes commissions transparent, so clinics actually engage with the program
  • Recurring affiliate revenue — subscription medications turn one referral into ongoing payouts
  • EU regulatory complexity, handled — VAT, currency and prescription considerations are baked into the store, not duct-taped on
  • Tiered commissions reward the best partners — higher volume earns higher rates, aligning incentives with business outcomes
  • Less manual ops — automated tracking and payout reporting replace spreadsheets

Need WooCommerce or WP Affiliate customized to fit your business?

Off-the-shelf affiliate plugins assume a generic creator-affiliate model. If your referrers are real partners — clinics, agencies, distributors — the plugin needs to bend to your business, not the other way around. I customize WooCommerce and WP affiliate setups so the platform fits the actual deal.
